Thousands of nodes and interfaces from a single web page
Drill into any element with associated alerts
Orion provides comprehensive fault management and network
availability tools to ensure that your network is always running
at peak performance. Via a cutting-edge, customizable web
console, Orion gives you a unified view into the performance
of thousands of nodes and interfaces on your network.
Orion serves up
detailed metrics like availability, bandwidth utilization,
and interface traffic for routers, switches, servers, and
any other SNMP-enabled devices. Additionally, Orion makes
it easy to track errors and discards and to examine signal-to-noise
ratio (for broadband networks). In Orion's web interface,
every network element is "hot," allowing you to
immediately view alerts and to drill into detailed metrics

Performance Management
Monitor network performance indicators like bandwidth utilization,
packet loss, latency, errors, discards, and quality of service.
Perform detailed performance monitoring and analysis of
network elements.
Orion provides real-time views of network performance and
availability statistics, as well as detailed monitoring and
analysis of data from routers, switches, servers and any other
SNMP-enabled devices. The result is a comprehensive view of
how the network is performing, providing you with the information
you need to quickly fix issues before your users ever have
a chance to call the help desk.
While other solutions only report on availability, Orion
gives you in-depth visibility into how network devices are
performing by tracking metrics like bandwidth utilization,

Network Map Maker
Orion’s Map Maker feature makes it possible for you
to view your network pictorially and visually track performance
data in real time via dynamic network maps. With Orion, you
can choose from several built-in geographic templates or you
can import a logical image of your network based on floor,
building, department, or larger geographic location. Multiple
network maps can also be linked to provide drill-down capabilities.
Orion allows you to simply drag and drop devices into their
appropriate locations on the network map so that you can view
the health of all network devices at a specific location.
When the network maps are saved, they are immediately updated
with the current status of the added nodes.
When a region is selected in the Orion web interface, the
corresponding network map for that location is displayed.
Green, yellow and red dots indicate the status of the nodes
at that location and enable you to quickly identify regions
with associated alerts. Orion can also display specific network
maps (and specific types of network information indicated
on those maps) based on the viewer's authorization level or
responsibility for particular regions of the network. For
example, if a device fails within a particular subnet that
a user is not authorized to access, then that user’s
map view will not go into alert condition, as the device is
outside the scope of authorization.

Custom Property
Editor
Track additional business and network information, such
as asset tag numbers or a carrier’s circuit number
Improve the ability to report on network data that is important
to your specific organization
Orion's Custom Property Editor overcomes the limitations most
network fault and performance monitoring solutions have regarding
the ability to group data and report on custom network information.
This powerful feature of Orion enables you to select from
a predefined list of properties or create custom fields to
track critical network and business information, ranging from
asset tag numbers to a device's location to a carrier's circuit
number. The Custom Property Editor also makes it possible
to display node or circuit-specific information, like the
escalation procedure for an outage. By recording, tracking,
and grouping these types of data, Orion improves your ability
to report on information that is specific to the needs of
your organization.

Custom HTML Resources
Create highly customized views by importing your own HTML
into the Orion interface
Create detached monitoring views (e.g., current bandwidth)
In addition to providing a highly flexible web interface,
Orion also enables you to import custom HTML to further customize
screens. With a few mouse clicks, you can replace one of Orion’s
maps or charts with a link to an external HTML web page. Orion
will then display the contents of that page within a frame,
empowering you to create completely custom network views.
Possible applications of Orion's support for custom HTML
include displaying a trouble ticket entry form or account
history. Some SolarWinds customers have even added a custom
link to a web cam of their offsite data center.

Custom MIB Support
Create a custom MIB to monitor any SNMP-enabled device
Monitor virtually any statistic available on networked devices
With Orion, it is easy to create a custom poller to monitor
any SNMP-enabled device value that has a MIB (Management Information
Base), which includes virtually any statistic that a network
device records. Examples of custom MIB monitoring include
monitoring temperature on a switch, fan speed on a router,
and battery status on a UPS.
In addition to creating custom MIB pollers, SolarWinds has
an extensive database of MIB information to determine the
English name for each OID and the MIB to which it belongs.

Role Based Access
Control
With Orion, you can create unique accounts by department or
by role within the organization, enabling you to specify what
types of information are displayed within the Orion interface
for that group or user. This ensures that only the people
who need to view specific types of information have access
to that data, providing an increased level of internal security.
Of course, it also means that you can simplify your boss’s
view to pretty pictures and single syllable words.
For example, Orion can be configured so that the server team
only sees the servers on the network, while the Texas IT group
has a view limited to the geography for which they are responsible.
Even better, you can further customize these views by creating
a page layout specific to an account, changing the color palette,
and modifying toolbars.

Customisable Web
Views
Orion's web-based views are fully customizable, ensuring that
the web interface scales to meet the needs of all sizes of
organizations and service providers. Each Orion screen can
be modified to accommodate a specific network design or customized
to display information in a particular format.
With just a few mouse clicks, you can move network maps,
change the page layout and even modify the toolbar. It's as
easy as checking the boxes to select the types of information
you wish to display. Custom links and selections can also
be added to a page.
Orion was designed to be highly flexible to meet the specific
needs of your organization. In fact, you can even replace
the SolarWinds branding at the top of the interface with your
company logo. Whether you decide to configure the system so
that everyone has the same view or each user has a unique
view, Orion makes the process quick and painless.

Enteprise Scalabililty
Scale from 50 to more than 100,000 network devices
Accommodate network growth and changing network performance
management needs
Orion ensures that your network will never outgrow your management
solution. As a highly scalable, network management platform,
Orion can accommodate network growth through the addition
of a hot standby engine, multiple polling engines, and additional
web servers. Whether your network is comprised of 50 devices
or 100,000 devices, Orion can support your growing environment
without major configuration changes.
Learn more about Orion’s scalability engines by visiting
the Scalability Engines section or clicking on the links below:
Hot Standby Engine
Orion's Hot Standby Engine consistently checks the primary
systems' ability to record network performance data. In
the event of a failure, the Hot Standby Engine automatically
assumes network monitoring responsibility. When a failed
polling engine recovers to an operational state, the Hot
Standby Engine automatically returns all monitoring tasks
to the original polling engine.
Additional Polling Engine
With the addition of another Polling Engine, the polling
load is distributed between multiple servers for large enterprise
networks; a typical bottleneck when polling thousands of
devices on large enterprise networks.
Additional Web Server
By adding an additional web server, the Orion website can
be run on a different machine than the Orion server, enabling
more users to access the Orion web portal without affecting
performance and providing increased scalability and deployment
flexibility.
